Pipe wrenches are designed to turn threaded pipe and pipe fittings for assembly (tightening) or disassembly (loosening). The Stillson pipe wrench, also known simply as the Stillson wrench, is a type of adjustable pipe wrench named after its inventor, Daniel C. Stillson. It was patented by Stillson in 1870 and quickly became a standard tool in plumbing and pipefitting applications. The patent has since expired decades ago. The Stillson pipe wrench is renowned for its durability, versatility, and effectiveness in gripping and turning pipes, making it a staple tool in plumbing, construction, and maintenance industries.
The Stillson wrench features a distinctive design characterized by serrated jaws that grip pipes securely. Its key feature is the adjustable jaw mechanism, which allows the wrench to accommodate pipes of various sizes by simply turning the wrench’s handle. This adjustability makes the Stillson wrench versatile and suitable for a wide range of pipe diameters. The jaws of the Stillson wrench are typically made of hardened steel to provide a strong grip on pipes without slipping. The wrench’s handle is often made of ductile iron or forged steel and is designed for comfortable use, allowing the user to apply significant torque when tightening or loosening pipes.
The Stillson pipe wrenches we supply are available in sizes 8″ (200 mm), 10″ (250 mm), 12″ (300 mm), 14″ (350 mm), 18″ (450 mm), 24″ (600 mm), 36″ (900 mm), 48″ (1200 mm), and 60″ (1500 mm). The maximum opening size (D), torque required (T), as well as the unit weight (W) are presented in the table below.
