Function of Alum in Water Treatment
Aluminum sulfate particles.
Aluminum sulfate, also known as alum, is a chemical compound with the formula Al2(SO4)3. It’s extensively used in water treatment processes, particularly in waterworks, for various purposes such as:
- Coagulation: Aluminum sulfate is primarily used as a coagulant in water treatment. When added to water, it undergoes hydrolysis, forming aluminum hydroxide precipitate. This precipitate acts as a coagulant, attracting and adsorbing impurities such as suspended solids, organic matter, pathogens, and certain metals present in the water. The formation of larger, floc-like particles facilitates their removal through processes like sedimentation and filtration, resulting in clearer and cleaner water.
- pH Adjustment: Aluminum sulfate can also be used to adjust the pH of water. It tends to decrease the pH, making it more acidic. This property is useful for neutralizing alkaline water, bringing it to a more neutral or slightly acidic pH range, which is often preferred for water treatment processes.

- Phosphorus Removal: In addition to coagulation, aluminum sulfate is sometimes used for phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. Phosphorus compounds are nutrients for algae and can contribute to eutrophication in water bodies. Aluminum sulfate can help in precipitating and removing phosphorus from wastewater, thereby reducing the risk of algal blooms and improving water quality.
- Color Removal: Aluminum sulfate can assist in the removal of color-causing compounds from water, particularly those derived from organic substances such as humic and fulvic acids. The coagulation process helps to agglomerate and remove these colored particles, resulting in clearer water.
- Turbidity Reduction: Turbidity, caused by suspended particles in water, can negatively impact water quality and aesthetics. Aluminum sulfate aids in the reduction of turbidity by promoting the formation of larger, settleable particles through coagulation, thereby clarifying the water.
