BS 5163 Gate Valves with Bypass To NWC, Saudi Arabia

SJZ Metalsin has supplied a batch of BS 5163 gate valves with bypass design to a NWC’s water distribution project, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. These valves have the following design characteristics: (1) resilient seated and non-rising stem (NRS); (2) stem cap furnished for key/bar operation; (3) bolted bonnet and flanged ends according to BS 4504 PN16; (4) body and bonnet made of ductile iron GGG40; (5) a smaller bypass gate valve is provided; (6) light-blue epoxy coatings on both exterior and interior of the valve.

The bypass valve is the most prominent feature of this BS 5163 gate valve:

• Design: The bypass valve is also a NRS resilient seated gate valve made of ductile iron but in much smaller size. It is installed alongside the main valve through flanged connection, connecting to the upstream and downstream outlets on the main valve body respectively.
• Function: The bypass valve in a water system serves crucial functions by allowing water to flow from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side of the main gate valve, equalizing pressure and making the main valve easier to operate, thereby preventing undue stress on valve components and operators. Additionally, it enables controlled pre-filling of downstream pipelines to prevent sudden surges of water, known as water hammer, which can damage the pipeline and equipment. During maintenance and operational testing, the bypass valve ensures some flow through the system even when the main valve is closed, allowing for adjustments and tests without disrupting the entire system’s operation.
