At Metalsin, we supply EN 1171 ductile iron socket end gate valves for connection with uPVC pipes in water supply and wastewater systems. These valves are designed to meet the technical requirements of EN 1074-1 & 1074-2. Manufactured as per EN 1171, the socket end ductile iron gate valves are frequently used with uPVC pipes, especially in underground and water distribution systems. Their design features non rising stem, resilient seat, and socket ends that receives the uPVC pipes. They can be furnished with stem caps for key operation or handwheels for direct manual operation.

Structural Design: The socket ends which are essentially enlarged inner cavities, are integrally cast on both sides of the valve body. Each body end is machined to create a “socket” end, where the inner diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the corresponding uPVC pipe, forming an insertion chamber. The uPVC pipe end is typically designed as a “spigot” end with chamfered edges, which facilitates smooth insertion into the socket while ensuring uniform contact with the sealing element. Both socket end & spigot end shall be designed strictly in accordance with ISO 4422, which specifies precise geometric tolerances for the uPVC pipe’s outer diameter, wall thickness, and socket depth.

Sealing Principle: A rubber (or typically EPDM or NBR) gasket is placed between the socket end and the pipe’s spigot end. When the uPVC pipe is inserted, the gasket compresses to closely conform to both the inner wall of the valve body and the outer wall of the pipe, thereby preventing leaks. This sealing method not only guarantees airtight and watertight connections but also compensates for minor misalignments or vibrations that may occur during operation.

Installation Process: Prior to installation, both the socket end of the valve and the spigot end of the pipe should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil, dust, or other contaminants that could compromise the seal. The gasket must be accurately positioned in the designated sealing groove of the socket end. Then, the pipe’s spigot end is inserted into the socket until the specified insertion depth is reached. In some designs, additional fastening devices (such as clamps or locking screws) may be used to further secure the connection; however, many ductile iron systems rely solely on the gasket seal and proper insertion depth.
