Features & Benefits of Drain & Vent Design

Designated with series number of MT-57-D23, the AWWA C515 gate valve with drain & vent design is a non-rising stem (NRS) resilient seated gate valve made from ductile iron.

The draining and venting design is achieved by a brass plug and a threaded hole drilled in the middle of the valve body. This brass plug/ threaded hole plays an important role in the use of the gate valve: (1) It actually serves as a sealed inspection port. When it is necessary to inspect, maintain, or clean the interior of the valve, this plug can be removed, allowing access to the internal parts of the valve through the threaded hole for necessary operations. Using brass for the plug provides excellent corrosion resistance and sealing performance, effectively preventing external contaminants from entering the valve body and also preventing internal fluid from leaking. (2) During the operation of the AWWA C515 gate valve, small amounts of gas or residual impurities may be produced, which can accumulate in the cavity of the valve body and affect its normal operation. Through this drain & vent plug (threaded hole), these impurities and gases can be periodically discharged, keeping the inside of the valve clean and smooth. Thus, this design allows maintenance to be performed without dismantling the entire valve, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
