BS 5163 Gate Valves Complying with EN1074-2

BS 5163 NRS resilient gate valves are commonly used for waterworks. They are made from either grey cast iron or ductile cast iron. These valves shall comply with EN1074-2, which defines the minimum fitness for purpose requirements for valves to be used in, or connected to, water supply pipe systems, above or below ground, carrying water intended for human consumption.

The BS 5163 NRS gate valve shall have full port design. It acts as an isolating valve, which is intended for use only in the closed and fully open position. A series of tests shall be performed in accordance with EN1074-1 to meet the performance requirements:

• Test to determine resistance to internal pressure of the shell and of all pressure containing components.
• Test to determine resistance of wedge to differential pressure.
• Test to determine the resistance of valve to bending.
• Test to determine resistance of valves to operating loads.
• Test to determine leak-tightness to internal pressure and external pressure.
• Test to determine seat tightness at high or low differential pressure.
• Hydraulic characteristics shall be reported.
• Test to determine the resistance to disinfection products.
• Endurance test for the BS 5163 NRS gate valves shall be performed, during which the number of opening/closing cycles to be counted: 250 cycles for manually operated valves; 2500 cycles for actuated valves.
