BS 5163 Type A & B Gate Valves | EN 1074-1 & 1074-2 Compliant

March 23, 2025

At Metalsin, we supply BS 5163 Type A and Type B ductile iron flanged gate valves with non-rising stems (inside screw stems) and resilient seats, complying with EN 1074-1 and EN 1074-2. These gate valves are predominantly key-operated, for underground use for waterworks purposes and primarily for use with potable water. The range of valve sizes covered is DN 50 to DN 600 for nominal pressure of PN 10 and PN 16.

Type A & Type B of BS 5163

BS 5163 Type A & B gate valves.

BS 5163 Type A & Type B ductile iron flanged gate valves for waterworks: A – stem cap operated; B – handwheel operated. NRS and resilient seated.

BS 5163 distinguishes two types of cast-iron gate valves for underground waterworks: Type A valves are designed exclusively for T‑key operation and are evaluated primarily on performance criteria without detailed design requirements for components such as the gate or stem dimensions, while Type B valves, which can also be operated by a T‑key, are engineered for heavier duty—designed for key/bar operation—and are built to withstand higher torque loads and bending moments as confirmed by more rigorous strength test requirements specified in the standard. BS 5163 gate valves of both types shall be furnished suitable for operation by a handwheel on the top (either directly or via a gearbox) or other actuators.

EN 1074-1 & EN 1074-2 Compliance

The BS 5163 NRS resilient seated gate valves supplied by Metalsin comply with both BS EN 1074-1 and BS EN 1074-2, which are European Standards for water supply pipe systems, above or below ground, carrying water intended for human consumption. EN 1074-1 specifies the general requirements for water supply valves — fitness for purpose requirements and appropriate verification test. EN 1074-2 specifies requirements for isolating valves (gate valves in this case) in water supply systems — fitness for purpose requirements and appropriate verification tests.

  • All materials (including coatings and lubricants) in contact with water must not affect water quality for human consumption (organoleptic, physico-chemical, microbiological). Elastomers must comply with EN 681-1. Internal/external surfaces must resist corrosion and aging.
  • The valve must be designed to operate under the characteristic pressures defined by PFA, PMA, and PEA. It must be designed for service temperatures from 0 °C (excluding frost) to 40 °C and storage temperatures between –20 °C and 70 °C. Clockwise closure preferred; anti-clockwise must be marked (except DN < 50).
  • The valve shell and the gate must be designed with sufficient safety margins against rupture. This is verified by ensuring that the valve can withstand an internal pressure equal to the higher of PEA or 1.5×PFA and that the gate withstands the differential pressure as specified (1.5×PFA or PFA+5 bar).
BS 5163 Type B NRS gate valves.

BS 5163 Type B gate valves with non-rising stem and flanged ends, epoxy coated, supplied to Kenya.

  • As an isolating valve, the gate valve should be designed so that in its fully open condition it offers either a full bore (seat diameter is not less than 90% of the internal nominal diameter of the body end port) or a clear way (an unobstructed passage that would allow a theoretical sphere of a diameter not less than the nominal inside diameter to pas).
  • The flanged ends of the gate valve shall comply with EN 1092-2 PN 10 or PN 16. The face-to-face dimensions shall be in accordance with EN 558-1.
  • The gate valves not only must withstand internal pressure (shell and pressure-containing parts) without damage but also must resist bending loads and operating loads. The seat must achieve a defined seat tightness under high and low differential pressures. For example, after closing with the specified MOT, resilient (soft) seats must not exceed leakage rate “A” and metallic seats must not exceed leakage rate “B”.
  • The valve must have a flow coefficient (Kv) that is at least 90% of the manufacturer’s indicated value when measured according to EN 1267. The valve must not show deterioration of components or degradation in seat tightness after exposure to a disinfectant solution. Specifically, no functional degradation shall be detected after 48-hour exposure to 50 mg/L chlorine solution.

  • The valve must undergo endurance testing: for manually operated gate valves, at least 250 cycles; for valves operated by electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic means, 2,500 cycles. After endurance testing, the valve must still meet the leak-tightness and operating torque requirements.
  • The valve must pass the full range of type tests as specified (internal pressure, differential pressure on the gate, bending, operating load, leak-tightness, seat tightness, hydraulic characteristics, disinfection resistance, and endurance tests – see Annexes A to E in EN 1074-2). Quality control shall be as per ISO 9002. Third part inspection is recommended.
  • The valve must be permanently marked with at least the DN, PN, manufacturer’s identification, year of manufacture, and EN 1074-1 or EN 1074-2. Packaging must protect the valve against mechanical damage and contamination during handling, transport, and storage.
