Pipe Ends of Steel Water Pipes with FBE Coatings

April 6, 2024

Fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coated steel water pipes can have various types of end connections, depending on the application and requirements. Some most commonly used pipe end types for FBE coated steel water pipes include:

  • Beveled End (BE): Beveled ends are prepared with a bevel or angled cut at the pipe end. This facilitates welding and ensures proper alignment between pipes during the welding process, particularly for butt welding where two pipes are joined end-to-end. A hold-back band that is free of epoxy coating shall be left on the external surface at each pipe end. This band shall be of sufficient width to permit field welding without damage to the FBE coating.

  • Grooved End (GE): Grooved ends have grooves machined or formed into the pipe ends. These grooves allow the pipes to be joined using grooved couplings, which are tightened around the grooves to create a sealed connection. Grooved ends are often used in firefighting systems and other applications requiring quick and easy installation.

  • Flanged End (FE): Flanged ends have flanges attached to the pipe ends, usually through double fillet welding or girth welding. Flanged connections offer a robust and easily detachable joint suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter piping systems. They are commonly used in industrial applications and where frequent disassembly is necessary.

The selection of the appropriate end type depends on factors such as the intended use, operating conditions, and installation requirements. When choosing the suitable end type for FBE coated steel water pipes, several factors need to be considered: (1) Intended Use: The end type should match the specific requirements of the application, whether it’s for potable water distribution, industrial processes, or other purposes. (2) Operating Conditions: Factors like pressure, temperature, and environmental conditions influence the choice of end type. For instance, high-pressure systems may require stronger joints such as flanged ends. (3) Installation Requirements: Considerations such as ease of installation, maintenance, and compatibility with existing infrastructure play a significant role in selecting the appropriate end type for FBE coated steel water pipes.
