A gate valve with an extended stem for underground water service is a specialized valve designed for buried applications, such as municipal water supply, fire protection, or irrigation systems. Its extended (often telescopic) stem allows the operator to access and operate the valve from above ground, despite the valve being installed underground. These underground gate valves typically feature a connection flange at the top. This flange provides a mounting interface for the extended stem device or a post indicator—a modified extended stem—that displays the valve’s open/closed status while allowing for easy above-ground installation and operation. In summary, the extended stem not only provides a clear visual indication of whether the valve is open or closed but also enables easier maintenance and rapid operation during emergencies without the need for excavation.

The underground gate valves are typically made of ductile iron and feature a non-rising stem with a resilient seat design. A mounting flange is provided at the top to connect with an extended stem or its variant, the post indicator. They are designed and manufactured in accordance with international standards such as BS 5163, MSS SP 70, AWWA C515, AWWA C509, EN 1171, BS 5150, SANS 664, DIN 3352, AS 2638.2, EN 558, etc. Both the interior and exterior surfaces are coated with FBE, complying with AWWA C550 requirements. For installations where the burial depth is uncertain, a telescopic/adjustable extended stem option is available. The stem nut at the top can be operated with a T-key, and an external sleeve protects the extended stem from contaminants, ensuring ease of operation and a long service life.
